To be able to have one’s cake and eat it too has become a reality for at least two groups of the Moorpark College campus.
The Associated Students of Moorpark College recently approved a new club on campus, the Hebrew Club.
Moorpark College will now have a both a Hebrew Club and a Jewish Club represented amongst the 22 other clubs on campus. Although the clubs will serve as a great complement for one another, they are not the same, according to founder of the Hebrew Club, Phil Regier.
“The Moorpark College Hebrew Club has a cordial and friendly relationship with the Moorpark College Jewish Club, but our goals are somewhat different,” Regier said in an email. “Our mission is to focus on the Hebrew language and eventually the literature of modern Israel.”
According to Regier, Maraganit Lish, the Hebrew Club faculty advisor, was the first promulgator for the club.
“We were encouraged to form our club from our faculty advisor, Professor Marganit Lish, who made the generous offer to meet with us on a monthly basis to guide us in preserving and advancing the Hebrew language skills that we acquired in our introductory Hebrew class at Moorpark College during fall semester of 2009,” Regier said. “We are continuing with the same textbook and learning new vocabulary and grammar so that we will be ready when the second semester of Hebrew is again available at Moorpark College.”
Regier mentioned that there are currently four students who are members of the Hebrew Club, although he hopes to be able to recruit more students from Lish’s introductory Hebrew class this semester.
Regier sends out his deepest gratitude for the diligent work brought upon by Lish to make compatibility amongst the Hebrew Club and Jewish Club a reality.
“We are very grateful to our advisor, Professor Lish, for her time, effort and dedication in working with our club,” he said.
