HS-111 was packed with students all eager to learn about doing the nasty and the diseases that emanate there from.
The “Let’s Talk About Sex” presentation is always a popular event every Multi-Cultural Day at Moorpark College. This is the fourth time Sharon Gibbs, Health Educator, and Debbie Sargent, Nurse Practictioner, organized this lecture.
“We’ve been told over and over again that it’s one of the best educational, entertaining program students have seen at MC,” said Gibbs.
The presentation focused on the top three STI’s found in college students, HPV, herpes, Chlamydia, and the ways to prevent them in a fun and entertaining way.
Students were asked to volunteer to come up and show how to properly apply a condom. Some failed. Captain Condom, a superhero who promotes safe sex, made an appearance also to hand out free condoms to participants in the discussion.
“If you’re going to have sex, always use a condom,” said Captain Condom. “But to be a hundred percent safe, it’s best to be abstinent. Sex can wait, masturbate.”
Students immediately paid attention from the very beginning as slides of diseased genitilia flashed in front of their eyes.
According to Gibbs, it is more important now than ever to talk openly about sex.
“A person can be infected and not even know it! More individuals who are entering a new relationship are either being tested together or strongly stating that they will each be tested,” said Gibbs. “It is absolutely more necessary to communicate about sex than before.”
The Moorpark College Health Center offers confidential testing to all students. For more information, call the MC Health Center at (805)378-1413.
