Kanamu already has ambitions and ideas for what he wants to see happen for the campus and said he wants to get more information out to students at a faster pace.
“The faster I can get them to know about things, the faster I can make them make decisions on their life,” Kanamu said. “I don’t think a lot of students know what this campus has to offer.”
VC currently has the Ventura College website, www.venturacollege.edu, but nothing more than that. Kanamu suggested the use of a Facebook for students to be able to find out upcoming events and what clubs the campus has to offer happening through ASVC.
Kanamu said that he is fit to lead the ASVC because of his efforts as a tutor. He said that since he has been working with students, he has learned what the students want. He also interned at the Public Relations office at Ventura College and found that a lot of people had good ideas for the campus.
Along with Kanamu, Richard Alcala will take the seat of vice president. Alcala is currently training to be a member of the football team. He is the current intercollegiate athletic liaison of the ASVC and the vice president of the Honors Club.
Alcala said that he too wants to spread information in a timely manner, but he also had another goal. He wants to get a designated smoking area on campus.
“I don’t want to take away from students’ right to smoke,” Alcala said. “Our current 20 feet away policy just doesn’t work well enough to keep the air clean.”
Alcala also said that he wants to take time to get students more involved.
“We get students involved not just academically but in life as well,” Alcala said.
Ventura has been a place of success for Kanamu, and he wants to help people reach the same success he has.
“VC has given me a lot and I want to give back and help others get to the point that I am at,” Kanamu said.
