The Moorpark Raiders defended their home turf as they defeated the Cuesta College Cougars 71-65. The Raiders’ success came at the free throw line. Going to the line 38 times, and converting 32 of them. The Raiders went 84 percent at the line.
Before the game the Raiders honored a former player . The Raiders retired the number five jersey for Keith Lawrence. Keith was a two-time team MVP, and led Moorpark to two division titles. Lawrence also had two divisional final appearances for the Raiders. Sadly, Lawrence had his life taken away this past year in the prime of his life. Lawrence’s mom and step-mom revealed the number five jersey up by the entrance of the gym. Keith wore that jersey during his time at Moorpark.
The Raiders entered the second half tied 26-26, and played well defensively against the Cuesta Cougars.
“They’re a great scoring team (Cuesta) and our defense played great against them” said head coach Remy McCarthy.
The Raiders were lead by guard Shaquille Moore who had 23 points adding 11 rebounds.
“When we were tied at half time we just told the guys to keep it buckle down on defense,” said Moore.
Austin Howell had 18 points with 10 rebounds, and JR Powell scored 12 points hitting two from deep.
“I felt like we didn’t do anything wrong tonight.” said McCarthy
The Raiders have now won four straight and are now 4-1 in Western State Conference play. The Raiders’ head on the road to face conference rival Ventura College, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
