Everyone knows MTV does not play music videos; that’s common knowledge. The network has evolved since it’s beginning from mindless dancing and head banging music clips to what it is today. The new MTV is one full of thought-provoking programming that inspires the youth of a nation, giving us meaning and a direction in life. Unfortunately that direction is straight into a wall.
One of MTV’s finest is the “Real World /Road Rules Challenge.” This show takes former cast members to a remote location away from their lives, pins them against each other in grueling tasks, such as tug o’ war, and then someone gets kicked off every week. But that’s not why this show is on television. Really it’s on because every night they all get drunk, have sex with each other and then fight until someone cries. Can you say quality television?
One of MTV’s most popular shows is “The Hills.” This group of attractive young people has become huge stars for no reason. They are not talented, they are not intelligent (or at least don’t display any intelligence on the show), and don’t even live exciting lives. I have no idea why this show is so intriguing, but we love it. We have to know if Heidi and Lauren are ever going to become friends again. And what about Spencer? Is Heidi going to stay with him? These are life changing questions that must be answered.
But by far my favorite show on MTV is “Paris Hilton is My New BFF.” Like OMG! Finally MTV realized we need more Paris Hilton in this world. Besides being a great role model for kids, she brings a real intellect to MTV that was clearly lacking before. And just think, one of those lucky girls will get to be her new BFF. I can’t think of someone who I would rather be BFFs with than Paris. These girls try so hard to impress her and it’s so sad to see them get eliminated. There goes their life long dream of being famous.
The educational programming put out by MTV is not part of new culture, it is culture. Young people alike follow blindly into the unintelligent programming that is MTV. But wait! Just when you thought the music was gone, now they play 10-15 seconds of a music video after each show ends as the credits are rolling. Way to stay true to your name Music Television.
