The Oxnard College Condors were swept 3-0 by the Cuesta College Cougars on the women’s volleyball court Friday night Oct. 17, but don’t tell them that they didn’t keep up with the Cougars. “We don’t want to be known as the team to quit,” said Condors team captain No. 3 Ashley Lajoie. “Our energy and heart picked up after the first game.”
In volleyball, it is set up in a best of five series so the winning team has to win three our of the five games to win.
After coming out in the first game, and being completely dominated by size, the Condors were wiped out 25-4. The Condors did regroup, and played much better in game two and three. In game two, the Condors were forced to play catch-up, after being down by as much as six points. They brought it back to as close as an 11-7 deficit, but after that, the Cougars pulled away and left the Condors grounded. In game three, the Condors started out strong with a lead as big as 8-4, but in the end the Cougars proved to be too much for the Condors as their size helped to pull them away and prevailed with a final of 25-17. The Condors Head Coach David Fischer is pleased with his teams overall performance but wants them to have a better sense of urgency. “We steadied out towards the end, but we need to be there from the first whistle,” said Fischer. Although being out performed in the end, Fischer said that some luck played into the Cougars’ favor. “In the first game, we were outplayed, and out lucked,” said Fischer. “We had our two hardest hit shots of the season, but both times it went off their head, or they miraculously got behind the ball and made a play on it.” No. 6 Ranesha Thompson had two great serves in the second game that left the Cougars scrambling for the ball. The peak of their serving was reached in the third game, when the Condors got an ace on a perfect serve that landed right in front of the boundary line on the back end of the court. The Condors look to turn around after this loss against the Cougars with a match-up against the Ventura College Pirates on Oct. 21, with game time set for 7:00 p.m. After that, they travel to Moorpark to take on the Raiders on Oct. 24, with the game time set for 4:00 p.m.
