After snapping their 10-game winning streak on the road, the Ventura College Pirates looked to remain as one of the front-runners in the WSC division as they tried to earn their first win in conference play hosting Pasadena College.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, Ventura’s home-cooking didn’t give them any edge, giving up 29 points in the fourth quarter to suffer their third straight loss.
Pasadena’s versatile quarterback Eldrin Jones held the Pirate defense in check essentially all night, using his speed and mobility in the pocket to elude the Pirates’ defensive secondary.Pirates Tim Pope, who was listed as questionable going into the game, caught the Pirates’ first touchdown of the night, when he hooked up with Mondol on an 18-yard fade into the right corner of the end zone.
At halftime, the Pirates led Pasadena 14-9, with the Pirate defense capitalizing in part to Jone’s second quarter injury which forced him out of two possessions.
Mondol threw his second touchdown to Patrick Herbet in the second quarter.
The Pirates defense stopped Pasadena on two fourth downs, as well as causing two huge turnovers that put the Pirates offense in the red zone.
Pirate defensive back Kavarius Walker had an interesting night, as he was involved in some of the game’s most crucial plays. On a Pasadena point, Walker was body checked by a Pasadena player, causing the Pasadena sideline to erupt. The Pirates punted the ball away, and soon after, Walker had blind-sided a Pasadena player, knocking him off his feet.
Walker also forced Jones to fumble the ball on a Pirate blitz.Pasadena’s Derek Mack intercepted Mondol on the Pasedena 40-yard line, returning the ball 68-yards in setting up Pasadena’s 29 point of the quarter.
Pasadena shied away from the running game in the first half, giving running back Joshua Morgan a total of three carries in the half. In the second half, Morgan carried the ball 18 times.
The Pirates look to clean up their three game losing streak with a game against College of the Canyons on Oct. 25 with kick off set for 7:00 p.m.
