A panel of three attorneys presented the social and political ramifications of Proposition 8 at Oxnard College on Oct. 15, as part of the OC Speakers Series.Attorneys Joseph Rund, Diane Goodman and Ellen J. Hirvela took turns explaining the history of equal rights for minority couples, such as then illegal interracial marriages up into the 1960s, as well as litigation against present-day homosexual couples.English professor and series coordinator Shelley Savren appreciated the legal history the panel described and compared it to the current plight of homosexual couples.”I thought the analogy they used of the African-American woman marrying a white man and being sentenced to prison for their ‘indecent behaviors’ was an excellent example at how discrimination can point at anyone,” Savren said.Students filled the LS-8 lecture hall for this fourth installment of the fall’s 12-part speaker series that have so far discussed topics such as the deaf community, the arts, gender, and racial equality in the workplace. This particular discussion encouraged a fair amount of student interest and, Savren said, a moral for all in attendance to take home.”It is my hope that people will think about the discussion when they go to the polls,” she said. “You wouldn’t want people to discriminate against you.”
