Students interested in transferring to CSU Northridge got first-hand information at the CSUN day held Nov. 10 at Moorpark College.
All academic colleges from CSU Northridge along with some of the student services like admissions and records, financial aid and housing were present to give specific information on majors and answer any questions students had.
Judi Gould, Career Transfer Center coordinator, said that even though the event had to be moved inside the cafeteria due to the weather conditions, it was an overall success.
“We wanted to do it in Fall because people are thinking about transferring,” said Gould.
CSU Northridge is the biggest transfer school for Moorpark students, around 500 to 600 transfer there every year, said Gould.
It was the first time that the college has held an event of this style. However, a representative of the university, who is only available by appointment, is on campus regularly to give students advise and information.
Gould thought it was a great opportunity for students to get a deeper insight into several majors, and to talk to different representatives of the university.
She said that people who are planning on transferring some time in the future should gather information on available options as soon as possible.
“We will do a lot of transfer workshops too to get people thinking about transfer before they are ready to transfer,” said Gould.
Darnell Edwards, who is the outreach coordinator of the CSUN Northridge events, said that the university mainly focuses on local schools like MC that have a high transfer rate when planning outreach events. These events aim to provide information on everything a transfer student needs to know.
“That is part of our mission,” said Edwards. “To make sure we are providing accurate information to help students to succeed educationally by giving them access to information on how to get into CSUN.”
Bradley Krebs, an 18-year-old MC student, saw the booths as he was walking by the cafeteria. It is his first semester at the college but he already talked to a representative of CSUN about his options.
“I just think it is a good idea to look into it and have a little bit information about it just in case I do plan on transferring there,” said Krebs. “When the time to transfer comes closer, I’m gonna look more into it, but right now I’m just looking at my options.”
Due to the event’s success, Moorpark College and CSUN are already talking about repeating it in Spring 2012.
Until then students can check out http://www.csun.edu/ for more information on CSU Northridge or call the Career Transfer Center at (805) 378-1536 for an appointment with a representative, who will be on campus next on Nov. 22.
