It’s that time of year again, we are well into fall semester and winter is on the horizon.
Metallics and nudes were a trend on the fall 2011 runways, proving that they will be back for another season. Structure, statement and simplicity are the key elements to keep in mind while shopping. Classic loafers, timeless watches, day-to-night tailored jackets, and leather booties should be on everyone’s shopping lists. Think signature staples and everyday wear-ability! To avoid breaking the bank, remember that neutrals will allow for repeat wear and thrift shopping can be done anywhere, even the local Goodwill.
High-end designers, from Calvin Klein Collection to Michael Kors to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row were showing furs in all varieties: hats, vests, coats. But a cheaper, equally chic and much more practical alternative is knitwear.
Converting an entire wardrobe to accommodate the latest fashion can be expensive, especially for a college student, and the Knitting Club at Moorpark College promotes a fun, therapeutic and thrifty way to keep up with today’s trends.
The Knitting Club is for knitters of all levels and is open to beginners who are interested in learning. Ashley Warren is a Science major and the current club president.
“When you knit, you just zone out. It’s really cool and therapeutic and really relaxing,” Warren said. “Its cool because if you don’t like sitting still, you have something to do with your hands, and it’s something productive. And you can make something out of it. “
The beauty of knitting your own accessories is their customizability to any color or any ensemble. The impossible search for a specific scarf is over!
Natalie Small is a 19-year-old Moorpark College student who is embracing the cooler weather and adapts her style to the latest fashions.
“I love anything with fringe like fringe bags in earthy tones,” Small said. “I usually wear knitted scarves.”
Others knit for the nostalgia. Taryn Intravartolo is a 19-year-old Sociology major and new member of the knitting club.
“I did it when I was younger, because my grandma was in town. She was the woman who could do everything possible, so I kind of wanted to be like her,” Intravartolo said.
Whether you are in search of a beanie in an obscure color or a new hobby, The Knitting Club may be the place to find it.
