Oxnard College students will be able to see Muhammad Yunus, author of the book “A World Without Poverty,” for free. The book was featured as the “One Book-One Campus” book last semester.
Yunus will be speaking at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza on Friday, Feb. 26. Tickets, which are regularly $20, are free to Oxnard College students who sign up with Engelsen.
“He (Yunus) represents an idea that we can create a world without poverty,” said Dr. Karen Engelsen, the dean of student services.
Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank, which specializes in micro financing, a process where a bank will loan small increments of money to people in third world countries.
Engelsen believes students can learn from Yunus, as she believes students can change the future.
“Students can be part of (this) ideal, not just faculty or community members, but students,” Engelsen said. “Students are the leaders of tomorrow.”
For ticket information, contact Karen Engelsen at 986-5937 or [email protected]. There will also be a sign up sheet in the Student Services Building with the student ambassadors at the information desk. There is a limited amount of tickets available to the student body and tickets are available on a first come first serve basis.
