Students majoring in business administration, mathematics, or journalism can now transfer easier with the newest additions added to a list of transfer degrees available to students.
Students who plan on transferring to a CSU in fall 2013 with an AA/AS-T must make an appointment to apply for the degree in the Administration building by Feb. 15.
Corey Wendt, the counseling department chair at Moorpark College, said that applying for the degree must be done with a counselor before the date mentioned above.
“It is important that students make an appointment well before that date as applying for any degree requires an appointment with a counselor to complete the necessary paperwork,” said Wendt in an email interview.
The AA-/AS-T, Associates in Arts/Sciences for Transfer, are degrees intended for students who plan to transfer to a CSU and complete a bachelors degree. California State Universities can now work with Community Colleges in the creation of transfer degrees. These transfer degrees allow students to complete their general education requirements while obtaining a degree at the same time. This process was made possible by the passage of Senate Bill 1440, also known as “The Student Transfer Achievement Act.”
Though a degree is not necessarily a requirement to transfer, there are benefits to obtaining it prior to moving on.
Lynn Hastings, a counselor at Moorpark College’s transfer center said the AA/AS-T’s help with admission to a CSU.
“It can also help in terms of a small GPA bump,” said Hastings.
Though business administration, journalism, and mathematics are the newest transfer degrees available, there are more in the works. According to the Articulation page on the Moorpark College website, there are several new majors which have transfer degrees in progress. These majors include: anthropology, art history, geography, geology, studio arts, and theatre arts.
The AA/AS-T degrees do not apply to UC’s and are only accepted by the CSU system.
