The Oxnard College Condors were swept 3-0 on Friday Oct. 17 by the Cuesta College Cougars in women’s volleyball, but don’t tell them that they didn’t keep up with the Cougars.
“We don’t want to be known as the team to quit,” said the Condors team captain No. 3 Ashley Lajoie. “Our energy and heart picked up after the first game.” After coming out in the first game, and being completely dominated by size, the Condors were wiped out 25-4.
In game two, the Condors were forced to play catch up, after being down by as much as six points. The Condors brought it back to an 11-7 deficit, but after that, the Cougars pulled away and left the Condors grounded.
In game three, the Condors started out strong with a lead as big as 8-4, but in the end the Cougars proved to be too much for the Condors as their size helped to pull them away and prevailed with a final of 25-17. Condors Head Coach David Fischer is pleased with his teams overall performance but wants them to have a better sense of urgency.
“We steadied out towards the end, but we need to be there from the first whistle,” said Fischer. Although being out performed in the end, Fischer said that some luck played into the Cougars favor. “In the first game, we were outplayed, and out lucked,” said Fischer. “We had our two hardest hit shots of the season but both times it went off their head, or they miraculously got behind the ball and made a play on it.”
Ranesha Thompson had two great serves in the second game that left the Cougars scrambling for the ball. The Condors look to turn around after this loss to the Cougars when they will play a match up against the Ventura College Pirates on Oct. 21, and will take on the Moorpark Raiders on Oct. 24.
