A positive generational outcome of social media is here. Interim President Dr. Bernard Luskin of Moorpark College is giving an important lecture on social media’s effect on behavioral traits and whether it is really “antisocial” at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 in EATM 208.
The lecture is about social media and how it affects the present and future lives of all of us. So many individuals have numerous technological devices they use daily, and what for? To communicate with others. According to Luskin, the more we use this technology to our advantage, the more we evolve into a different lifestyle.
“Because of the pervasive use of technology, we are evolving,” said Luskin. “That means our brains are evolving and that means we are getting smarter.”
Luskin’s inspiration for this lecture began when Michael Seabaugh, a writer from 805 Magazine, called him personally and asked for an interview on social media. Seabaugh then published an article about the interview.
A few faculty members, including Svetlana Kasalovic, read the article and encouraged Luskin to give a public lecture at Moorpark College, just like he did at California Lutheran University.
In the 805 magazine article, Seabaugh wrote, “Luskin is an eminent and widely honored expert in the intersection of technology, media, and education.”
Many students, faculty, and social media enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this “hot topic,” as Luskin believes that he will get your attention.
This is because more than 75 percent of Moorpark College students are under the age of 25. Technology and social media started advancing when they were young, and now it has taken over their lives.
“I am a digital immigrant,” said Luskin. “Those [kids] who just naturally do the darndest things with their devices; they are digital natives.”
Luskin believes generations and behaviors change, and people adapt according to the current generation. We change to fit the lifestyle of now. According to him, our current generation has a huge technological wave and more sophistication to adapt widely to these positive social media outcomes.
“Everything you focus on expands, it gets your attention, and it grows,” said Luskin.
Luskin is involved in a variety of organizations, and his passion for pursuing dreams has inspired many individuals. He believes that with one act of generosity, your whole view on the future can change. It’s not about texting, Facebook, or twitter changing the way we communicate; it’s the fact that we’re still communicating.
