The Multicultural Club at Moorpark College is one that welcomes students who are interested in learning about different cultures around the world.
The Multicultural Club educates students on different places, religions and foods. This club is about understanding all cultures.
“The Multicultural Club is a really great club with great students,” said Mike Johnson, the club advisor. “We like to learn while having fun.”
For students who want to learn about different cultures, eat different foods and watch movies, the Multicultural Club on campus does just that. For the up coming semester the club plans on visiting the Museum of Tolerance and a farmer’s market. They will also host a German food and movie event as well as a Mongolian food and movie event. They have already sponsored a movie marathon featuring Blood Diamond, Babel and An Inconvenient Truth. They are hosting a golf tournament on Oct. 19.
In the past the club has been to places such as a Japanese Internment Camp and the Cesar Chavez Museum
The Multicultural Club meets every Wednesday at 1p.m. in the Applied Arts Building Room 109.
“We like being involved in the community and leadership activities,” said Johnson. “Students get the experience of understanding other people and cultures as well experience great places.”
The club has many members. There are several students who regularly attend meetings and many more who participate in the Multicultural Club events. They even have former club members who still attend activities.
“It doesn’t matter if you are German, Italian, Asian, Black or Hispanic,” said Johnson. “The interaction with students different from yourself is unique.”
There are over 20 clubs on campus. The Multicultural club is one of the most active. Not only do club members learn, they have fun, and they can state that they were involved with the club on future college applications.
“We want to experience different religions and gain as much insight into the fabric of our American culture as well.” said Johnson.
