The Western State Conference record books need to be rewritten, as the team of Collin Baratte, Rafael Ingannamonte, Steven Edgar and Eric Rennspiess set the WSC relay record in the 400-yard medley relay during the first day of the WSC championships at the Santa Clarita Swim Center.
The Pirates 4-person tandem swam the medley in 3 minutes, 31.17 seconds to erase a one-year-old record set by the Pirates last season. Edgar won the 200 individual medley in 1:55.56 and freshman Jordan Singleton won the 500 freestyle in 4:46.46.
The Pirates look to win their eighth straight WSC, and have put themselves in the best position to do so, building a nearly 200-point lead over Los Angles Valley College in the team standings, which features L.A. Valley as well as Cuesta, Citrus, L.A. Pierce, College of the Canyons, Bakersfield and Santa Monica City College.
The women are also in position to win the WSC, as they currently hold a smaller, but steady 15 ½-point edge over Cuesta on the first day of the competitions.
The Pirates women team (197 ½ points), holds the 15 1/2 –point lead over Cuesta (182), followed by Bakersfield (158) and Santa Monica City College (141).
Competitions will resume Saturday afternoon at the Santa Clarita Swim Center.
