The Moorpark College Swing Dance Club is hosting a Valentines Day dance on Friday the 13.
The Swing Club’s dance will be held in the Performing Arts Center Room 107 from 8p.m. to midnight. It is open to those of all dance levels and for those who are just beginning, at 7p.m., simple steps will be taught.
Swing Dance Club President Michael Interlicchia is looking forward to building up the club’s community feeling with more events.
“The previous president’s major goal was to get as many people as possible and to really expand,” said Interlicchia. “My goal is to strengthen what we have because we have a little over 200 members, but some are inactive. So active members, we have close to 150.”
The Swing Club is planning to have workshops and dances at least once per month to achieve their goal of sharing swing with the masses. Their next dance is planned to be a “Spring Fling”. Interlicchia not only has plans to have more frequent swing events, but to also have interdepartmental events. For example, he is trying to organize a night with the Moorpark College Jazz Band so the swingers can dance to live music.
“The Club is basically geared toward providing an awesome swing dance environment for people weather they’ve been dancing for a really long time or a couple of weeks,” said Interlicchia. The Friday the 13 dance will feature a well known disc jockey in the swing community, D.J. Paul Almazan of the swing club Memories in Whittier. Almazan will not only be featuring East and West Coast Swing music, but also Hip Hop and Latin, so anyone who enjoys cutting a rug can join in.
The Moorpark College Swing Dance’s Valentines Day Dance is free of charge, but donations would be accepted and appreciated to support their award winning Swing Dance Team. For more information about the Moorpark College Swing Dance Club, visit www.myspace.com/swingheads.
