The way to check your oil is, by physically looking at the oil.
Remember oil washes off, but having a huge bill from the mechanic sucks.
Check your oil by pulling out the dip stick. If you are unfamiliar with the location of the dip stick, look in your owner’s manual. It should be under “maintenance.” It should have a diagram or at least explain where it is.
If you don’t have an owner’s manual, then you should remember this: oil is either bronze or black. Transmission fluid is red.
Once you have located the dip stick, pull it out and wipe it off, then insert it back in, then pull out again to get an accurate reading. Look at the dip stick carefully, at the end of the stick there should be a crosshatch or some indicator. If your oil is at the required full mark then you should be okay, but if it is lower than that, it means that you are low on oil.
You’re probably saying, “But where does the oil go?” Usually there is a cap on the engine that says oil. You must remove the cap to insert the oil.
Now some of the newer cars do not have a place for you to put oil in. If so, then take it in to any oil change garage. Some oil change places such as Jiffy Lube, will top off your oil, for free, if you have had it changed by them, and as long as it is under a certain mileage.
If you have a mechanic, take it to them or if your vehicle has a warranty with a dealership, don’t hesitate, that’s what a warranty is for. Remember your oil is one of the most vital fluids in your car.
You should make a routine of checking your oil once a week. It does not take very long to do and it will make your vehicle more reliable for years to come.
