About to begin his first season of college baseball, Cory Goldsmith, a freshman business major out of MoorparkHigh School, is eager for the upcoming season to start.
Even though Goldsmith Went to Moorpark High School, lives in the city of Moorpark, and takes all of his academic classes at Moorpark College, he plays baseball for the Oxnard College Condors.
It was not a tough choice for Goldsmith who spoke several times to the Condor coaches.
“The Oxnard Coaches came to my games, they called me and talked to my parents,” said Goldsmith. “I never talked to the Moorpark College coaches personally.”
Goldsmith has played baseball most of his life, starting with T-ball at age 4. Now he is a pitcher, stands 6-foot-1-inch tall, and is 18 years old. Last year at Moorpark High School Goldsmith went 5-4 with a 2.30 ERA.
When he is not playing baseball Goldsmith spends his time playing Xbox 360 and works at a sports apparel store. Currently Goldsmith is a business major and would like to be a trainer for a sports team if he does not play baseball.
Oxnard knew they wanted Goldsmith on their team and they did what it took to get their guy.
“The Oxnard Coaches invited me to their field,” said Goldsmith. “One even came to the high school all-star game.”
The Oxnard Coaches are excited for Goldsmith to be on their roster.
“One of our assistant coaches saw him throw at Moorpark High School,” said Oxnard College Head Baseball Coach, Jon Larson. “He was highly impressive.”
“He can mix it up with hitters. Most importantly he can throw four pitches for a strike.”
Goldsmith will be a starter for a Condor team that looks to compete for the Western State Conference title. He has high expectations for not only his team but himself.
“I think we will be good,” said Goldsmith with a chuckle. “But it’s hard to tell because we have only played against ourselves.”
League play for the Condors starts Feb. 28 with their first game against Moorpark College on Mar. 13 and their first game against Ventura College on Mar. 27.
