53 students gathered in the black box theater at Moorpark College on August 23 and 24 in hopes of being cast in one of the 11 student written, One Act productions to be put on later this fall.
Victoria Viel, assistant professor in the theater department at Moorpark College, summed up what the One Acts are.
“They are entirely self written, self directed, and self acted” said Viel.
Viel also explained that the genres performed in the One Acts are broad and include; comedy, musical, drama, and even fantasy. Each act’s duration can be anywhere from 10-15 minutes, and there are typically three-to-five performances each night.
Preparation for the One Acts begins as early as a semester prior to opening night.
Over summer break, the writers behind this production have been working with theater teacher John Loprieno to perfect their scripts.
“I like the process” said Loprieno. “To work in the theatre is an ongoing thing.”
Seta Wainiqolo, 21, digital media major, thought that the auditions went well, and he saw a lot of talent.
“There are a lot of good people out there” said Wainiqolo. “Plus the directors don’t seem to be that scary, so that’s a good thing.”
Frank and Constants Semponis are working side by side to direct the One Act “Only at Sunset”. Frank, a high school student at Alemany, got involved in the One Acts because of his sister Constants who recruited him to aid in directing.
“I’m looking forward to helping the actors and helping my sister” said Semponis.
Professor Viel also teaches a Lighting Design class in the fall, which is involved in the technical aspects of the production. The students in these classes get hands on experience in doing the lighting for each show.
The Original Student One Acts will be held on various dates throughout November and December. For more information visit the Moorpark College websites Performing Arts page, or call the box office at (805) 378- 1485.
