Students will read excerpts from the novel and explain how they relate to us in “Frankenstein: The Creature and You,” based on the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The event will be held in the Clock Tower Auditorium at 12:45 p.m. on May 13.
Oxnard College English Professor Anthony Rodriguez organized the event and its theme of rejection and revenge.
“We will have the audience consider isolation, alienation and revenge,” said Rodriguez. “Especially when a person has the best intentions initially and gets rejected.”
“The Creature and You” is the last event in the OC Literature, Arts and Lecture Series for the Spring 2009 semester. Unlike most other lecture series events, students will present their work as part of the forum.
English Professor Shelly Savren, the organizer of the lecture series, said she is looking forward to the event because it features students.
“Each student takes on a role and has homework that requires quotes,” she said. “Anthony organizes it and sets up the students but sits in the audience during the presentation. He always packs the halls.”
The students use quotes from the book that best represent revenge or rejection. They will give an analysis of the quote and how it affects the characters in the book and in real situations.
The presentation will be set up in the form of a panel. One student will read off a quote and the other participants will discuss it. Towards the end of the event, the audience will join in the discussion.
One of the presenters, Joel Helling, 18, explained some of his work.
“There’s a creature in our life that we create and then destroy,” said Helling, a computer engineering major. “An example would be technology getting better and older jobs becoming obsolete, so we need to find a balance between the progression of technology and job stability.”
