Foreign cultures, students dressed as overweight ballerinas, and wild animals were on campus last week for Moorpark College Club Day.
Activities such as the ninja slide, pumpkin giveaway, and Associated Student board members dressed in costumes added some zaniness to Club Day. The activities were organized to show that Associated Students and club members like to have fun like other students.
“It’s promotional. It’s basically this PR idea to be wild and crazy,” said Andrew Anzalone, 18, AS director of student organizations, “Student government is thought to be these anal kids. We’re not. We just work hard and play hard.”
Club Day is designed to showcase clubs and to raise student awareness of their activities. Students can also sign up to join clubs on campus as well. On Thursday, 17 of Moorpark College’s 29 clubs on campus gathered at the campus center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each club had their own booth and told students passing by about their purpose and goals as clubs. Deanna Hallum, 32, creative coordinator for Neighbors Embracing Multicultural Arts, dressed up in multicultural garb for the event. She said it was an opportunity for clubs to get known.
“We’re just happy to have this opportunity at Moorpark College,” said Hallum. “And it’s great to be able to show our activities. We are a show-and-tell type club.”
Associated Students also held a pumpkin giveaway. Students with current Moorpark ID’s were entitled to a free pumpkin. The pumpkins were supplied with money raised selling student ID’s.
Tanya Pulley, 19, director of Public relations for AS, said the hope was that students brought in with pumpkins would become interested in joining a club or two, and possibly go down the ninja slide.
“We want students to become more involved, and we hope to attract them with activities that show we let loose and have fun too,” said Pulley.
