The Moorpark baseball team is still soul searching, trying to find ways to win when nothing seems to be going right.
The Raiders gave up five runs in the first inning, including two unearned runs on two costly errors, setting the tone for another long game in a 10-2 blowout to Oxnard College Saturday afternoon at Raider Field.
Raiders’ pitcher Ryan Donahoe, who was tagged with the loss, believed it is difficult to start the beginning of the game strong, as well as the end of a game when your team is struggling.
“I know the first and last innings are the hardest innings,” Donahoe said. “We have to set the tone right there.”
The Raiders (5-12-1, 0-6 WSC) pitching woes continued, giving up ten or more runs in their first six conference games, all losses.
Raiders outfielder Brett Hackenberry noted how much easier it is to pitch when you are ahead, and when you play from behind, there is little room for error.
“It’s a lot easier to pitch when you are ahead,” he said. “From a pitching standpoint, you can’t make any errors after that. You got to be flawless.”
Although Donahoe had a rocky start, he managed to pitch through five innings, only allowing one more run over the next four innings.
According to Donahoe, a rough start does not faze him, but it simply makes him want to pitch more aggressively.
“Giving up the five runs in the first inning just makes me want to work harder,” he said. “It makes you just want to attack. No one wants to lose.”
The Condors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before adding on a run in both the fifth and sixth, and before putting the game away with three runs in the eighth inning.
The Condors (13-5, 5-0) are riding a seven-game winning streak and are in complete control of the WSC.
The Raiders hope to gain their first conference win with some stronger pitching when they travel to Cuesta College next Thursday, March 25.
The Condors look to continue their domination in conference play against Ventura College at home next Thursday, March 25.
