Long ago, in ancient Egypt, people toiled away knitting things out of yarn. Thousands of years later, in the 21st century, Byrnn and Sierra Cook have formed a club to continue this age old tradition.
While knitted items have been found dating back to the 3rd and 6th centuries AD, today’s Knitting is mostly done as a hobby.
“It’s relaxing and constructive; you can wear things you have made,” Says Sierra Cook, president of the Moorpark College Knitting club, The Knitwits. Sierra Cook, the President of the club, started it several months ago to give students the opportunity to learn a new fun skill, and to make friends with shared interests.
“I thought it would be a good chance for people to take a break from studying and enjoy knitting.”Sierra’s twin sister Brynn, an English Major, has been knitting for about 3 years and enjoys it because of the basic skill and the relaxation factor.
“It’s just convenient to be able to do something with your hands.” The Cooks would eventually like to have one of the club’s purpose’s be to donate to a local charity, such as the Crisis Pregnancy Center, which is local, says Sierra.
“Initially, I wanted to have the club to donate for charity”. Sierra is an undecided major and has been knitting for 7 years now.
The Cooks have knitted a verity of things, such as sweaters, hats, gloves, blankets and of course, socks. The Club accepts all levels of knitters and will readily teach people who are interested how to knit. Heidi Gean, a member, loves the club.
“I love being able to have others to share my knitting ideas with and help me fix all the mistakes I make.” The Club was founded earlier of last year and is always looking for more members to share in this unique mutual interest.
“There’s always a new pattern, technique, or yarn to try! I like being able to share ideas and patterns with other knitters” Says Beverly Barker, a math professor at Moorpark College, who is also the the knitting club’s advisor.
The Club meets every week, in the Moorpark College cafeteria at from 1:00pm to 2:00pm For more information contact Sierra Cook at [email protected].
