The Ventura College woman’s basketball team showed no mercy for Oxnard in a 63-16 blowout Saturday night at Ventura.
Coming in, Ventura was considered one of the top teams in the state, and overmatched the young Oxnard College squad.
Donielle Griggs lead the way for Ventura with 14 points, serving as a dominating force in Ventura’s frontcourt. Ventura led the entire game, and picked apart the inconsistent and poorly defended 2-3 zone of Oxnard. Oxnard failed to score a basket in the first fourteen minutes of play, outplayed by a tenacious Ventura defense.
Donielle Griggs was pleased with her team’s performance tonight, pointing out the strong frontcourt game from the Ventura guards as well as the deep bench.
“Our guard play helped us win the game tonight,” Griggs said. “As a team, we play very well, and can rely on someone coming off the bench to carry out a strong performance.”
Griggs is a sophomore leader on the team, bringing a sense of urgency to her teammates.
Although Ventura College feels confident with tonight’s win, Pirates Center Julie Heurung reminds her teammates to not look too far ahead.
“We got to take one game at a time,” Heurung said. “We have to come prepared and not let looking ahead to our main goals get in the way of the next team we are playing.”
With the win, Ventura remained undefeated at 23-0, while Oxnard fell to 10-13 on the season. Ventura will play next against Alan Hancock College in Santa Maria on Jan. 28, and Oxnard College will host Moorpark College on the same day.
With Ventura College having much promise this year, it’s only a matter of time before they will finally break their undefeated streak.
