I never fully realized what I was getting myself into when I enrolled into the journalism program at Ventura College. After being briefed about what was going to take place, I questioned how successful it would be and how far this experiment could go. As the new semester started I realized that this program would go as far as the students wanted it to go.I can say that after being a part of this program for two years (or three semesters) that this paper and all the students that have participated in it since have given it their all and have done a great job in informing the students, as well as faculty, about what is going on in their school.I’ve had such great experience being a part of this program and all it had to offer. I met so many different people that helped to the success of my starting college career. I look back at all the memories I have accumulated over the past two years and I am so grateful for being a part of something so special.Journalism is something that people need. It has become a staple in society and it helps inform people about issues that are going on in the world around them. Everyone can benefit from taking a class about journalism even if it isn’t their major or they have no interest in obtaining a journalism career. You learn so many things about how to look at the world and take whatever information obtained and being able to form a story for others to read. You can improve your skills when it comes to researching information on a specific topic, you can even improve your speaking skills when meeting new people. It is important to teach others about journalism and the benefits to becoming a reporter in the world today. As I look back at theses past two years, I see that everyone who has been a part of this paper has contributed in some way and has really helped with the success. I still hope that one day Ventura and Oxnard College may have a campus paper to call theirs one day. It will take some time before V.C. and O.C. will have their papers back once again. Ventura is taking small steps in ensuring that V.C. will have a paper once again. This past year V.C. was given two journalism classes that would be taught right there on the campus rather than it being taught via video conferencing. The class offers students the chance to understand the basics of journalism and it even lets students experience the different ways of reporting a story. Unfortunately it may take even longer before O.C. will have their paper back once again due to low enrollment in the program. My past two years have been filled with fun and enlightenment. I thank Joanna Miller for everything she has done for me (especially helping me find a great job with the Ventura County Star.) She has taught me what is necessary to become a reporter. She welcomed me with open arms and was there to help critique my stories and to tell me what I needed to focus on and improve in order to become a better writer. I also thank Star Hunter, my journalism teacher at V.C. for this past semester. She has helped bring interest in journalism back at V.C. and has really given me more insight into the world of reporting.I would also like to thank all the friends that I have made over the past two years who have been a part of the paper and have helped contribute their time and effort into seeing this program succeed. I also thank the district and every faculty member that was involved with The Student Voice for their support and guidance. Most importantly I would also like to thank the many students out there who look forward to reading the paper when they get to school. Without their interest and curiosity about what is taking place around school, then ultimately there is no paper. The paper is there for the student’s enjoyment; they are the ones who we write for, i.e. The Student Voice. So no matter how long it takes before each school has their own individual paper once again, The Student Voice will be right there to reporting any news that any of the three schools might have.
The future is in the students’ hands
