“People are here to help them to smooth out the transition from high school to college,” said Director of Outreach Richard Torres. “For some it’s a big hurdle and we want them to take advantage of all the resources we have.”
Local high school students from the Conejo Valley, Simi Valley and Moorpark took tours of the campus, heard presentations from faculty and staff and met with departments, which set up tables in front of the Performing Arts Center. The event lasted from 8:30 a.m., to 1 p.m., when the last high school departed.
“They each see the brochure, but this is their chance to meet with faculty, staff and all the departments,” Torres said.
Torres’ main goal was to get students more acquainted with the way the registration process goes on campus.
“I think that it makes you understand more because it’s less pressure and people are helping you,” said Briana Cervantes, 17, from Simi Valley High. “They are really open so it doesn’t seem very difficult, it opens opportunities so you know what you want to get too.”
Students visiting felt that the day, along with the campus, was a success and a good place to be.
“I like the (campus) atmosphere, it’s very open,” said Kimberly Folck, an 18-year-old senior from Simi Valley High School. “I came because I wanted to learn about the programs that I want to get into.”
Students from Moorpark College also were found walking the booths to get some information.
“I just came down to get more information on different majors,” said physiology major Alyssa Busse, 20.
At day’s end students were pleased with the presentation of the campus they will be attending in the future.
“I wanted to see if it was everything the Web site said it was,” said Tyler Gearhart, 17, from Simi Valley High. “It was.”
