Several days a week, Gabby Luciani makes the 30 minute commute from Ventura to Moorpark College. Though the Ventura and Oxnard campuses are much closer to her home, Luciani has chosen to be a Raider and has shown dedication to her team for two consecutive seasons.
The Moorpark College Women’s Volleyball team ended their four year stretch as Western State Conference Champions this season as they fell to Santa Barbara City College. Though they no longer hold the title of champions they had quite a respectable season.
A major factor in many of their victories was Middle Blocker Gabby Luciani.
Luciani is a Communication Sciences and Disorders major who just played her final season as a Raider. The 20-year-old out of Buena High School will return to her hometown of Ventura in the spring.
Luciani’s game was quite productive with 28 service aces and 214 points earned this season.
Assistant Coach Aaron Hedland spoke about the leadership Luciani brought to the team and the progress she has shown.
“Gabby has been a great leader for us this year and has not wavered nor shirked responsibility during this difficult season,” said Hedland. “The most impressive thing about Gabby is the amount of personal growth she has exhibited on and off court from last season to this season.”
Though Luciani is no longer able to play Volleyball at the Community College level, she hopes to continue her athletic career elsewhere.
“I want to go to school somewhere in Colorado” said Luciani. “I don’t know where yet but I’m applying.”
Luciani hopes to earn a Bachelors degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and will apply to the University of Northern Colorado where she hopes to get back out on the court.
Luciani said she is comfortable with her academic performance but would still like to obtain an athletic scholarship.
“I’m confident with my grades and I think I’ll be able to get in that way but if I could get my school paid for with a scholarship that would be ten times better,” said Luciani.
Moorpark College Women’s Volleyball ended their 2012 season with a record of 10-5 (W-L). Though Luciani will not return next year, she has had a respectable performance in her two years as a Raider and wishes the best of luck to her former team mates.
