Students interested in learning about diversity in the world can visit Moorpark College’s Multicultural Day where they can attend lectures, performances, exhibits, and discussions on Tuesday, April 9th.
Ali Meshoubian, 20, sociology major, finds great importance in the whole aspect of Multicultural Day.
“We come from a diverse universe,” said Meshoubian. “Our neighbors, friends, loved ones and even great ancestors could come from a variety of different cultures. Taking a day to learn about different cultures and different lifestyles is intriguing and so interesting.”
Multicultural Day is holding their 23rd annual event, which is dedicated to the importance of living in a diverse world.
Jerry Caplan, coordinator of Multicultural Day, explained how this year Moorpark’s “Year Of” theme is “The Individual and Society” so the Multicultural Committee adopted the theme of “The ‘I’ in Diversity.”
“To me, the ‘I’ in diversity means that we have a number of human relations, beginning with the relation to self,” Caplan said. “Then to family, to society, to government, to [the] world. All of which represents a dynamic interplay between ourselves as individuals and ourselves as connected to others.”
Caplan said that this is not an event intended to make a financial profit, but one whose “currency” is bringing us closer together as a community, celebrating what is meaningful and beautiful in our cultural mélange, and adding to the character of Moorpark College as a community of diverse individuals with a common purpose.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, and mugs can be ordered through emailing Caplan at [email protected].
Multiculutral Day will be held on Moorpark College’s campus with free admission.
