TEDx preview: inspiration comes to Moorpark College

By Saffana Hijaz, Staff writer

For the first time, TEDx is coming to Moorpark College on April 18. Taken on by lead organizer Svetlana Kasalovic, this exclusive event is only allowing 100 people to enter to witness these speakers.

This is similar yet separate from its leader of events, TED Talks, since the “x” in TEDx represents an independently organized TED event.

“[The purpose of this event] is to shine a light on local artists and this area in Moorpark College,” said Co-organizer Jeremy Kaye.

The TEDx lottery has narrowed down entry to 50 students and 20 faculty. By using their MyVCCCD emails, people can sign up on the TEDx website at http://www.tedxmoorparkcollege.com/. The remaining spots will be given to volunteers and speakers.

Sponsored by Custom Melt, Starbucks, and Costco, the event will serve breakfast and lunch throughout its lengthy day from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Although the sponsors are quite clear, the room for which the event will be held is not. Down to two choices, the Forum or the EATM building, it has come down to the intimacy of the room versus the technological advances.

Although TEDx’s motto is “Ideas Worth Spreading,” there is so much more. The whole point is to learn something you may have not known before and think differently, seeing things from a different perspective.

“I definitely want people to leave inspired and actually to have change in their lives because of the talks,” said volunteer Melvin Kim. “Hopefully people will learn and be better people and that there [will be an] actual sociological benefit.”

The nine speakers that will stand before the selected 70 on Good Friday will be people worth listening to. With topics such as being an individual, finding meaning in one’s own life, and life lessons on failure and success, among the six other amazing and listen-worthy topics, the event is sure to be inspirational.

Mentioning the major experience she has earned, Erin Nosco, TEDx’s representative for Associated Students, has attended the meetings and expressed her appreciation of Kasalovic and the other team members.

“I didn’t know that we could hold events like this,” said Nosco. “I look forward to helping students in learning this great information.”

As a new and refreshing experience for Moorpark College, this may open up doors to hold more inspirational events like this in the future. Students are encouraged to sign up so that they may be lucky enough to be selected to attend this exciting event
