The 2014 season for the Softball team has come to a close, the Lady Raiders finished the season with a 7-11 record in WSC play.

The Lady Raiders had a young team this season, having only four sophomores on the entire roster. The team started off trading wins and losses in their first four games. The Raiders then went through a slump, and accumulated a losing streak.

Head Coach Dave Fox attributed early season play as to why the Raiders have had a difficult season.

“At the start of the season we weren’t playing good softball,” said Fox.

Only eight players from a roster of 14 played 30 plus games out of the 37 total played. With already being a young team, the Lady Raiders suffered a large amount of injuries throughout the season making it hard get any sort of flow going. Even with all of their set backs, the women seemed to keep themselves positive during the season.

The Lady Raiders were lead by four sophomores this season: Hannah Brown, Sarah Goulding, Briittney Reed and Alexx Robles. All four knew what it took to win and knew how to carry a team. They were returning WSC Champions and had high hopes for their team. They knew how hard they would have to work in order to keep that title and did everything they could to keep their team strong.

“This is some talent (sophomores) that we are going to miss for the following year,” said Assistant Coach Brittany Clifton.

Their season may not have ended the way they wanted, but the sophomores gave everything they had.

“It was sad that we couldn’t win our last home game,” said Sophomore Brittney Reed. “I am going to miss all my teammates.”

Freshmen Hanah Roberg lead the Lady Raiders in homeruns with four total on the season and averaged a .432 batting average. Jenna Haffemeir and Megan Zigler both hit two homeruns for the Lady Raiders. Nicole DiBene-Gorger was in the top five in the WSC for stolen bases with a total of 16 this season. All these women are freshmen for the team, and ones that could help this team improve next season.

The Lady Raiders’ team is young, and has a lot of potential for next season. This season was a difficult one, but it was one that provided good experience for the freshmen on this team, and will allow them to learn from this as they move on to next season.
