Moorpark Retires Number 5 in honor of Keith Lawrence

By Chase Oliver

Its been over a year when a tragedy happened that struck the hearts of the many in the Moorpark community. It was announced that Moorpark Raider legend Kieth Lawrence had his life tragically taken away from us far too early.

Lawrence was voted Moorpark team MVP twice when he played at Moorpark. He led the Raiders to a perfect 12-0 record in WSC play his sophomore year, giving Moorpark College two WSC division title during his tenure. Lawrence led the team to two division state championship appearances. Truly one of the greats to ever play at Raider Pavilion.

“This past year has taken its toll on Moorpark HS, Moorpark College and the Moorpark community,” said Head Coach Remy McCarthy at Lawrence’s Jersey retirement “We’re all still visibly wounded. We loved Keith.”

A bunch of former teammates, friends, family, and USC Public Safety Office all came to the jersey retirement where we honored Keith as not just a basketball player, but as the wonderful person he was overall.

“The way that Keith carried himself you wouldn’t expect that he was a basketball star,” said Athletic Director Howard Davis

The number five jersey was unveiled at the entrance of Raider Pavilion by Keith’s mother Venus, and step-mother Janet. The Jersey can be viewed at the top right of the Raider Pavilion entrance.

“When Keith came from Cal Poly we were ecstatic to get him,” said Davis “He was a phenomenal player here and overall a great person that left an impact here at Moorpark College.”

Lawrence was a tremendous person who left nothing but a positive impact as not only as a basketball player here on campus. Lawrence left an impact as a student, and friend to many here in the Moorpark Community. We will always remember Keith, and feel his presence every single game as the five jersey hangs up there.
