As the excitement of Majors Week keeps going, many students already feel energized after attending the several panels and workshops offered for specific majors. The Engineering Majors meeting on April 23 in Fountain Hall, was an approach to the engineering industry many students, specifically engineering majors, had not experienced.

With the help of full time engineering faculty Scarlet Relle, a handful of guest speakers led the meeting by talking about their careers as engineers and gave advice to the students pursuing certain science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, fields.

“I picked engineering because there is constantly something to develop,” said manufacture engineer Gary Pangelina.

Each speaker not only had an extensive background in a specific field of engineering, but career and job experiences that helped them cultivate skills that would ultimately benefit them in the future.

“This industry isn’t easy,” said mechanical engineer Doug King. “When you’re employed, all of your intellectual property belongs to the company (you’re working for).”

While it is a complicated and difficult field, the speakers encouraged the students that succeeding as an engineer is not impossible. For some of them, it was a matter of trying out other things before realizing the engineering field was their calling.

“I found out about engineering through my husband’s friends,” said thermal fluids and mechanical engineer Kathy Paulson. “I knew they weren’t smarter than me so I went for it.”

After the presentation, students felt uplifted and hopeful knowing that their hard work at Moorpark College as engineering majors will eventually pay off.
