The Moorpark Raiders women’s soccer team lost to Camarillo’s ENCL champions, the Eagles, on Tuesday in their first scrimmage of the 2014 Fall season. The Raiders battled through three periods to a final score of 0-3.

Nineteen-year-old midfielder Marissa Horton returns for her second soccer season at Moorpark College with high hopes for the Raiders.

“I think it was a good starting point,” said Horton. “We are going to learn to work really well together, and we all get along really well.”

Horton finished off strong during the second and third half on the defense end, just as assistant coach Geoff Raives encouraged during the game’s half-time break.

“I think overall we improved as the game went on,” said Reives. “We held the ball much more, we won more passes… So many things went better on the third part. I’m happy with how we progressed as the day went on.”

With the new season comes new players, some of whom are stepping into a college field for the first time, who are expected to integrate with the returning members of the team. To achieve this, Raives emphasized the importance of game field interaction for team bonding.

“This is our first time together,” said Reives. “We gotta learn more about each other and this is kinda where it happens.”

The Lady Raiders will play their first official game of the season against Santa Monica College at 3 p.m. on Sep. 2, where they’ll begin work on their primary objective of the season to “keep improving,” said Raives. “That’s really the goal.”
