The Moorpark College Raiders traveled down to Ventura College Saturday night to take on divisional rival the Ventura Pirates. The Raiders fell to the Pirates 48-21
The Raiders were able to keep up with the Pirates for much of the first half. Despite two early turnovers. One of the turnovers being an interception going back for a touchdown. The Raiders were able to keep up with the Pirates. Late in the second quarter they were only down by six with the score being 20- 14. Though near the end of the first half the Pirates were able to score a touchdown to close the half with momentum.
The Pirates would use that momentum in the second half as they were able to score an early touchdown at the start of the second half. For much of the third quarter the Raiders struggled to drive down the field, and it didn’t help when there were a lot of false star penalties which would stall the Raiders drives.
Due to the amount of time that was left, and the lack of getting any momentum early in the third the Raiders had to enter four down territory for the rest of the drives if they wanted to make a game out of this. The Raiders were successful in two out of there four attempts on fourth down. One of the attempts was a 23 yard touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Zach Labar, to wide-reciever Cody Tuttle.
All though the Raiders had some success late it wasn’t enough as the Pirates kept on getting big play, after big play which lead them to run the scoreboard, and secure the win for the them.
Moorpark Head Coach, Will Thurston declined to talk about the game.
The Raiders on offense were lead by Labar who had 227 yards passing, and three touchdowns. Tuttle was able to catch five passes for for 81 yards and a score. On defense linebacker Alex Small had a total of 11 tackles leading the pack for the Raiders.
The Raiders are now 1-3 overall, and 0-1 in division play. The Raiders will be traveling to Palomar next weekend in hopes of picking up the first road win of the season.
