Moorpark gave their best efforts but couldn’t come up with a win at home in the home finale.
The Moorpark Raiders entered their last home game of the year with a record of 2-6 but seemed hopeful to try and end their season on a good note; starting with a win against College of the Canyons.
As the game started, you could feel that the atmosphere was intense as this would be some of the Raiders last time playing in Griffin Stadium. They knew that in order to get a win they would need to come out strong against a tough opponent.
“Tonight was bittersweet,”Raekeal Beasley, who was one of the Raiders playing in Griffin Stadium for the last time. “We wanted to get the win.”
Much of the first quarter the two teams traded empty possessions until Canyons finally broke through for a touchdown, only to have Moorpark cut the deficit to four with a field goal of their own.
The next few scores were punched in by Canyons to give themselves a 21-3 lead midway through the third quarter. Yet Moorpark never gave up as quarter-back Nick Davis rushed into the end zone for 7-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-10 and give the Raiders some momentum.
Yet the Raiders momentum didn’t last long as Canyons quickly built a 35-10 lead on Moorpark at the end of the third quarter basically sealing the Raiders fate in the game.
In the fourth the Raiders showed off some of their explosiveness by scoring two more times. Running-back Dontavious Grace exploded for a 56-yard touchdown run and wide-reciever Keiwuan Miller caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach LaBar.
Despite the scoreboard the Raiders never got down on their selves and the players on the sidelines were constantly cheering on their teammates to do well.
“It was good for the young guys to get out there and play.” said running-back Raekeal Beasley.
Head Coach Will Thurston said that the biggest reason for the lose was the turnovers and the momentum swings throughout the game yet pointed out a lot the Raiders did well also.
“We were strong on defense tonight, especially coming off the defensive line.” said Thurston.
Quarterback Zach LaBar led the way in the passing game by throwing for 151 yards and touchdown while running-back Dontavious Grace rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown.
The final score would show the Raiders losing to Canyons 41-22 dropping the Raiders record to 2-7 on the season. The Raiders will look to end their season with a win when they travel to take on Allan Hancock on Saturday, November 15.
“The next game is going to be a big one,” said running-back Raekeal Beasley. “It is a rivalry.”
