Moorpark College students or staff members who own electric cars will so be able to charge their vehicles at charging stations.
Two students have been caught using the school’s electricity to charge their electric vehicle in the parking structure said campus police.
“Staff are in the process of completing the agreement and obtaining the final approval from the Board of Trustees,” said Vice President of Moorpark College Business Services Iris Ingram.
A grant from the California Energy Commission will help fund the project.
Last spring Moorpark College applied for a grant from the CEC. The Moorpark College campus is one of the sites selected to have the installation of electric vehicle chargers subsidized, said Ingram.
“The process could take another 30 to 90 days,” said Ingram, who is also responsible for negotiating and securing the agreement. “Once installation has been completed, a district-wide announcement will be made.”
According to Ingram, pricing decision and signage are currently being reviewed and determined. Once they are finished, installation will be the next step.
The grant will give Moorpark College two dual-port charging units because Ingram successfully applied for a grant, said Sr. Administrative Assistant of Moorpark College Business Conni Bittinger.
The grant will cover the installation and a portion of the maintenance costs for the first three years, said Bittinger.
The fee for the use of the electric car charging stations has not been set and it will also require the approval of the Governing Board. There will be a nominal fee to cover the cost of electricity and a parking permit will still be required, said Bittinger.
“The infrastructure is already in place and ready to receive the charging equipment,” said Bittinger.
The location of the two dual-port charging units location has been decided, but it still requires the Board of Trustees approval, said Bittinger.
Director of Maintenance and Operations John Sinutko said the location of the charging units will be in the parking structure on the 2nd ground level, north side, west of the elevators.
Supervisor of Moorpark College Police Lt. Greg Beckley said the students that were given a warning to not use the electricity had their information written down, so that if they are caught again they will be cited for theft of utilities.
“There is no second warning,” said Beckley.
