Students who are leery about walking back to their cars in the dark after night classes can call campus police for an escort.
While campus police do not have an official escort program, college police officers will provide escorts to students upon request.
Moorpark College Police Supervisor Lt. Greg Beckley said that while the police patrol is heaviest during the busiest and most populated times on campus, the police are still keeping a watchful eye on campus activities.
“With our 250 plus cameras, we are able to monitor much of the campus simultaneously,” Beckley said.
Stephanie Mena, a 21-year-old music and psychology major, said she has anxiety about walking to her car at night after her two evening classes.
“Both of my classes are in the [Academic Center] building so I have to walk down to the [parking] structure,” Mena said. “The part where the high school is, is pretty dark and so I just go around the gym because there is light there.”
Mena said that she often feels nervous, even though both her classes end at 7 p.m.
“I’m not really scared for my life but sometimes I get really nervous,” Mena said.
MC student Lluvia Mayorquin said that she feels more comfortable because of the presence of campus police at night.
“I often see campus police around when I get out of class and so I think it’s pretty safe,” Mayorquin said.
