Student Voices: Back to Class Spring 2015

Students across campus talk about their hopes, and concerns for the upcoming 2015 spring semester at Moorpark College. Each student will explain what they expect for the new semester.

  • Collin Duffy, a second year psychology major, began his final semester at Moorpark College wondering why textbooks are so expensive.- Tyler Irvin

  • A third year veteran of Moorpark College, Michael Kilmartin, 75, offered insight into the tough parking situation, “The parking is always bad,” said Kilmartin, an entrepreneur who is studying music and art. “It’s always better to get here early.” – Frank Ralph

  • Andrew Fox, a Moorpark College student, is looking forward to the spring semester. “I expect to get straight A’s and meet more cute girls,” said Fox. Fox had an easy time finding parking because he got up early this morning. Fox’s advice for how he balances his work and school is “you got to do what you got to do and if there is a will, there is a way.” – Agustin Garcia

  • Edith Morales, a second semester student at Moorpark, was optimistic about this semester, “I’m interested in radiology, I’m taking radiology classes here at Moorpark so I can be near my son,” said Morales, a Moorpark resident, “But what I want to do is get into nursing.” – Frank Ralph

  • Aerospace is a tough major, but 21 year old Chris Shahbazian from Agoura is sticking it out in order to work with his father in their family business. “I have it kind of easy since I work with my dad, but this semester will be hard because I have all my engineering classes,” Shahbazian stated. He is hoping to pass all his classes in order to transfer so that he can earn his degree. – Jessica Frantzides

  • Jennifer Polanco of Simi Valley, 23, has entered her Spring Semester eager to pass her classes so that she could transfer to Channel Islands next fall. She is a Psychology major and all she is worried about is passing her final Psych class to meet the transfer requirement. “I’m just looking forward to getting out of here!” she exclaimed. – Jessica Frantzides

  • Second semester freshman Omar Abdallat, 19, looks forward to the New Year here at Moorpark College. “Learning a lot more than last semester, passing my classes, and most of all English class” are his focus this semester.- Jonathan Suarez

  • Andrew LaSala, 31, is returning back to school after 13 years to earn his degree in Business Administration. “I quit my job so I could go to college and work on building study ethics,” said LaSala. “I can pay for my books and supplies with help from financial aid since I’m not working.” – Hope Leonard

  • Mary Macatangay, a second semester nursing student is most concerned about the subject matter of her nineteen units. “Last semester, I took a medical class and it was pretty difficult for me because it was my first semester and everything was new, so I had to drop it,” said Macatangay, who hopes to retake the class over summer. – Amanda Galvez

  • Kyle Tamkin, 22, a freshman, came to Moorpark College in the fall of 2014 and is undecided on a major. He said that he likes the library. “I like the friendly staff, and can easily find the books I’m looking for,” Tamkin said. “I also like the small school atmosphere.” – Brian King

  • Daniel Nelissen, 18, a Freshman chemistry major, came to Moorpark College in the Fall of 2014 from Santa Susana High School. He was originally a Theater Major. “I was testing the waters but decided to switch to chemistry because it’s more useful,” Nelissen said – Brian King

  • Ryan Garcia, in his second year at Moorpark College, is working part time to help pay for his classes this semester. “I’m looking forward to getting better grades in these new classes,” said Garcia. “But I have to work to pay for these terrible book prices.” – Hope Leonard

  • Not allowing work to interrupt his school schedule is a priority for Fernando Melchor, 18, of Simi Valley. The second semester psychology major didn’t find parking to be an issue for him this year and is remaining focused on his major. “It’s pretty simple,” said Melchor, a Santa Susana High School graduate. “I don’t have a job so I should be setting up my [psychology]AA.” – Lauren Du Casse
