Moorpark College defeated Antelope Valley 3-0 in the baseball season opener at Raiders Stadium on Tuesday afternoon after a two year hiatus from the sport.

Freshman Wyatt Brig, from Thousand Oaks High School, pitched seven shutout innings for the win. He was followed by Michael Deleon in the eight and closer Thomas Luevano got the save.

“It was my first college game and I was very nervous, but I worked through it.” Brig said. “I couldn’t have done it without the backup. I got a lot of ground balls, and [my teammates] had my back.”

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, batter Austin Fields beat the throw to first base and runner Garrett Kueber crossed the plate for the Raiders first run. Moorpark added a second run in the sixth. With one out in the inning, Terrell Tate singled and promptly stole second. With two out, Parker Hindle doubled to bring the runner home.

“We played good defense and we pitched [well], and whenever you do that you usually come out ahead,” coach Mario Porto said. “We didn’t get a lot of hits, but they came at the right time.”

The Raiders added an insurance run when leadoff hitter Riley Conlan got a base hit in the bottom of the seventh. He stole second, reached third on a hit by catcher Ryan Mulville and stole home on an infield error with two men out.

“It was a good first game for us,” Porto said. “These guys were a little tense and nervous, and for them it’s good to get it out of the way.”

The pregame ceremony, celebrating the return of baseball to Moorpark College, was conducted by Howard Davis, athletic director, where he introduced past baseball coaches and other guests and celebrities associated with the Raiders baseball program.

“After an absence of two years and nine months, or 1006 days, baseball returns to this great college,” Davis said. “And for the first time in 1006 days, let’s play ball.”

After two quick outs in the top of the ninth, the Marauders got two runners aboard to scare the home crowd before Eric Baynton flied out to right to end the game.

“We play East LA next and they’re really good,” said Porto. “Offensively, we have to be more patient. I’m happy it’s done, and now we can get down to business.”
