In a game dominated by solid pitching and defense, Los Angeles Valley College outplayed Moorpark 2-1, and brought home the winning run on a key squeeze play in the seventh inning at Raider Stadium Thursday.

Moorpark’s Chase Fredrick, who picked up the loss, pitched a solid game into the seventh inning and was replaced by Michael Deleon who gave up the go-ahead run. Infielder-turned-pitcher Thomas Luevano shut out the Monarchs the rest of the way in a losing cause.

“I felt pretty good for a couple of innings,” Fredrick said. “I’m not too happy right now. I couldn’t throw first-pitch strikes and I couldn’t find my breaking ball. [However,] as a team, it’s time to move on and forget about it.”

Monarch’s pitcher Jesus Farias, who gave up a run in the second, shut out the Raiders for six and two-third innings, was replaced by left handed closer Robbie Stowell, who stymied Moorpark in the late innings.

“I have a cold, and I wasn’t 100 percent today, so I tried to take it one pitch at a time,” Farias said. “I was a little nervous [at the start], but my defense was behind me, and I pitched [well] enough to give my team a chance to win.”

The Raiders took the lead in the bottom of the second with one out when catcher, Parker Hindle, was hit by a pitch. Outfielder Garrett Serino singled, and designated hitter, Dalton Duarte hit a slow roller in front of the plate to load the bases. Jessie Aucelluzzo’s fly ball to the outfield brought home the Raiders only run.

“It all started with the pitching, and it was a well played game on both sides, Valley coach, Dave Mallas said. “Jesus Farias gave us seven great innings, and Robbie Stowell came in and gave us two and a third.”

Valley tied the game in the sixth when leadoff hitter, Sadik Spence was hit by a pitch. With one out, a single by Barry Blake put runners on first and second, and Dylan Mersola’s single brought Spence home. With one out and the bases loaded, the Monarchs threatened again, but first baseman, Nick Snyder hit into a double play.

The Monarchs brought home the winning run in the seventh. Outfielder Mike McCallister was hit by a pitch and stole second with one out. Catcher Hector Rodriguez walked. McCallister stole third, and Isaac Dominguez squeeze-bunted in front of the plate to bring him home.

“It’s good to have Moorpark back in the league, and it’s good to see Coach Porto over there [in the dugout,]” Mallas said. “They’re always going to have a competitive team, so it’s been a challenge for us today.”

The Raiders are now 4-2 on the season, and will play their next home game on Feb. 12 against Bakersfield College.
