The Raiders lost their first match of the season to the Golden West Rustlers in straight sets Wednesday night at the Raider Pavilion.

The Raiders were in each set, losing two by two points, and one by three points, but could not find a way to get those extra points in order to win it.

“We have to win the small plays,” said coach Aaron Hedland. “We need to do the things that don’t come up on the stat sheet.”

Despite losing the first set the Raiders were able to stay in the game with the help of Michael Esper, co-captain, outside hitter. Esper led the Raiders with 10 kills, 15 digs, and 4 service aces.

“Staying confident is key,” said Esper. “We need to trust in the guys, and commit to our hitters.”

The Raiders matched the Rustlers in the second set with points, but could not close the set to win it. They eventually lost the set with a spike by Lenzie Ainsworth, opposite hitter for the Rustlers.

The third set started out different than the previous two for the Raiders. The Raiders took an early 4-1 and climbed up to a six point lead midway through the set. However, inopportune serving and finishing led to the loss.

“We have a habit of playing tight when we have the lead,” said Hedland. “As soon as we get ahead, we get a little nervous.”

The Raiders look to rebound from tonight’s close loss, as they head on the road to face the Palomar Comets on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
