Using Mathematics to Distinguish Myth from Reality is an event in which Dr. Brendan Purdy, an associate professor of mathematics at Moorpark College, will use math and statistics to examine myths and realities of popular issues.

Purdy said he believes that many students are not sure how mathematics can be applied outside the classroom. He wants them to realize that using logic and statistics is a great way to understand the way the world actually works.

“Mathematics is awesome and is a powerful tool for understanding the beauty and patterns of the natural world,” said Purdy.

At the event Purdy will intend to use applied mathematics to answer questions about a variety of topics including the lottery, college cost, Alzheimer’s patients, gun control and even the Zombie Apocalypse, said Purdy.

Purdy has degrees in Philosophy and Mathematics from UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Irvine. Having been a member of the faculty for seven years, he is currently on sabbatical researching the method and practice of teaching statistics.

Admission to the event is free, and it will take place on Wednesday, February 18, from 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in COM 129 (TV Studio).
