The Board of Trustees discuss the reasons why they support President Barack Obama’s America’s College Promise Plan on Tuesday.
The America’s College Promise Plan was proposed on Jan. 9 by President Obama to make community college free for two years for responsible students. This proposal will also let students earn the first half of a bachelor’s degree as well as learn skills the student will need in the workforce.
Community colleges should be free for those willing to work for it because in America, a quality education cannot be a privilege that is reserved for a few,” said Obama at Pellissippi State Community College. “I think it’s a right for everybody who’s willing to work for it.”
Trustee Chair Dianne McKay said that the promise will allow more student to come to college which is why she supports it.
Trustee Bernardo Perez said he supports the Obama’s promise because it seems like the thing to do because student these day go through a different type of stress than what he went through during college.
“We should be looking at this as an investment,” said Perez.
