The Raiders men’s volleyball team captured their home win of the season Wednesday night when the played L.A. Trade Tech. This marks the start of the second round with a win at home.
The Raiders entered the match, one game up on the visiting Beavers. The visiting team came into the game in last place.
“You just can’t look at the scoreboard when you play a match like this,” said head coach Aaron Hedland. “When you look at the scoreboard, that’s when upsets start to happen.”
The Raiders won the game in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-15.
Mario Urquidez led the way with a perfect game, no errors, to go along with 11 kills, and six blocks. Sam Christie, middle blocker, was a force in the middle, accounting for nine kills, and two blocks.
“The biggest thing was we were able to keep our momentum,” said Jamal Balkhi, libero, and co-captain of the team.
The Raiders are not mathematically out of the playoffs yet, and look to pick things up in the second round.
“We have goals in place for each game, to keep moving forward,” said Hedland. “Our next goal is to catch the team ahead of us.”
That team ahead of the Raiders just so happens to be the team they welcome to campus road on Friday, the L.A. pierce Brahmas.
