Campus Police Supervisor Lt. Greg Beckley saved the life of a Simi Valley women from being hit by the Surfliner train after her vehicle flipped multiple times.
On March 16, a women’s Honda Fit flipped after she lost control of her vehicle on the 118, which caused Beckley to act. He said he was on his way to Moorpark College from Oxnard College around 10 a.m., when he was surprised to see the front end of a Honda Fit on the rail road tracks where Hitch Boulevard fuses into the 118.
“It’s like all your worst nightmares coming true,” said Beckley.
He said that at that time he wondered how the vehicle got there, until he noticed a women at the far side ether trying to get something out of the vehicle or trying to pushing the car off the tracks.
Beckley said he ran to help the women and that is when he saw the train heading their way.
“Get away from the car,” said Beckley. “Get away from the car.”
He said he was able to move her, after she noticed the train. Around the same time, the train struck the vehicle destroying it.
“Just seeing that train scared the hell out of me,” said Beckley, who smiled as he thought about the event.
The women showed no signs of injuries after being check multiple time by paramedics said Beckley.
VCCCD Chief of Police Joel Justice said he believes Beckley is a hero because he jeopardize his own life to save that women, showing the highest standards of his profession in law enforcement.
“Although I expect my [officers] to do what they can to save lives, this was going above and beyond,” said Justice.
Beckley said he doesn’t consider himself a hero because that is his job.
Over the course of his career he has saved many peoples’ lives, many never knowing they were in danger, he said.
“That’s the trick to the trade, never let them know that they are in danger,” said Beckley. “Every now and then you get caught in the act.”
