Lieutenant Greg Beckley of the Ventura County Community College District Police Department was recently nominated for the City of Moorpark’s 2015 Man of the Year award, by the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce, Police Chief Joel Justice said in an email.
Beckley was recently acknowledged for his heroic action and quick thinking when he saved a woman from an oncoming train. The woman had been in an accident and her car flipped onto the railroad tracks. Beckley pulled the woman to safety before the train struck her vehicle.
“I was honored to be recognized by the Chamber of Commerce with the Man of the Year Nomination,” Beckley said in an email.
The Moorpark Community Awards, held on May 12 at the Moorpark Country Club, has been a tradition since 2004. Nominations are accepted from all sources in Moorpark, both chamber members and community members. The choices are made by a panel of Chamber board members and staff, according to the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce’s website.
Some other awards include Hometown Hero, Educator of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
Despite the nomination, Beckley lost the award to Dale Parvin, acting CEO of the Rotary Club of Moorpark.
Justice said that he constantly strives to have the VCCCD police department recognized as a premier law enforcement agency, and feels that people like Beckley carry it toward this goal.
“It is a great honor to have [an] officer of our police department honored for the things we do,” Justice said in an email. “Not only does it make the police department shine, it makes the district shine.”
