A candlelight vigil was held at Warner Center Park in Woodland Hills, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, in memory of Feras Morad, a 20 year old student killed by Long Beach police on May 27.
“Let us all gather to commemorate the wonderful man who tragically lost his life.” The event’s Facebook page says. “It is best that we stand in solidarity to remember all the great times we shared with Feras.”
Over a hundred people attended the gathering where friends, teachers and family shared experiences and thoughts about Morad.
The event lasted for about two hours, in which anecdotes about Morad, hopes for the future and a poem by his sister, Ghada, were shared.
“He was going to change the world,” Ghada said.
Morad, a former Moorpark College student and nationally ranked debater, had fallen out of a window and was injured when the officer arrived, according to a news release by the Long Beach Police Department. He was reported as intoxicated, and after unsuccessful attempts to subdue him, the officer shot and killed him.
Ghada and other family and friends have set up Facebook and Twitter page s called Justice for Feras Morad and Justice 4 Feras, respectively. Their goal is to provide support to his family and raise awareness about his death. The hashtags #justiceforferas and #notanotherpoliceshooting are being used to, in their words, expose this incident to the public.
“We need justice for my brother,” Ghada said on her twitter page.
A Gofundme account was also created with the goal of raising $33,095, corresponding to his birthdate of March 30, 1995. The money is intended to help the family have a proper memorial and funeral service, and to afford legal aid to seek justice and accountability, according to the website. It has already raised over $11,000.
