MTV Video Music Awards are gaining attention on social media, from Justin Bieber’s comeback performance that ended in tears to Miley Cyrus’ choice in apparel.
As over the top as it was, the MTV VMAs never fail to give viewers something to talk about. With her interesting personality, Miley Cyrus as a host would have been enough, but the celebrity feuds, marijuana references, and unorthodox fashion choices put it over the top.
After releasing her popular album “1989” in 2014, it’s no surprise Taylor Swift was a big winner, taking home three awards for Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Pop Video.
Other winners included Fall Out Boy for Best Rock Video, 5 Seconds of Summer for Song of the Summer, Nicki Minaj for Best Hip-Hop Video, Bruno Mars for Best Male Video, Fetty Wap for Artist to Watch, and “One Man Can Change The World” ft. Kanye West and John Legend won for Best Video With a Social Message, according to the MTV website.
However, the awards and an 11 minute speech from Kanye West did not take up the entire nights events.
More than ten artists performed, among them included Walk the Moon performing their summer hit “Shut up and Dance”, The Weekend performing “I Can’t Feel My Face”, and Nick Jonas performing “Levels.”
Ashtyan Wachtel, a 21-year-old humanities and art major, attended the VMAs for the second time this year and gave positive opinions regarding the performances and this year’s host.
“I thought [Miley Cyrus] was pretty good, she was out there, and I think the performers were better this year than last year,” said Wachtel
The night wasn’t all smiles though. During the show, it was announced that Justin Bieber was performing on the VMA stage for the first time in five years, singing his latest single “What Do You Mean.” His performance ended in tears but Bieber has yet to release an official statement regarding his emotional state at the end of the performance.
These performances not only entertained the audience, but also provided insight on the end of a celebrity battle that had been occuring over social media.
An ongoing twitter feud is assumed to now be settled between Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj after their performance of “Trini Dem Girls,” “The Night Is Still Young,” and “Bad Blood.”
The VMAs provided the perfect opportunity not only to end some feuds but to start some as well. Upon receiving her award, Nicki Minaj did not hesitate to call out Miley Cyrus for rude remarks made during a previous interview.
Other celebrity guests brought up old gossip on air during their speeches like Taylor Swift, who did not fail to mention Kanye West’s interruption during her award acceptance at the VMAs in 2009.
The scandals and drama however only seem to fuel the interest of the viewers.
Ciarra Castillo, 20, performing arts and humanities major, has gone to the VMA’s twice but was unable to attend this year. Castillo was impressed with the show nonetheless.
“People think that Miley Cyrus is really crazy, but to me as a viewer, I would want it to jump out and actually be a good show,” said Castillo. “She brought it out, they were wacky, but I think it made it more enjoyable.”
