Spotify: The ideal streaming device
September 6, 2015
Spotify has been my favorite streaming device for the last few years.
It is user-friendly, there is a college student discount subscription, and there is dozens of ways to discover new artists. The options are limitless when it comes to listening to music, but Spotify has always suited my needs.
Out of all the ways to listen to music, statistics show Spotify has been the best go-to application to stream songs for the last few years. Spotify has over 60 million users worldwide and 15 million paid subscribers every month, according to a TechRadar report.
Some argue that Spotify does not help the musicians make profit, but they are paid $0.006 to $0.0084 each time a song is streamed according to Spotify’s information page. Unlike Spotify, Apple Music only pay their publishers $0.00047 per stream, reported by BGR.
It does help new listeners discover musicians in a whole new light. Spotify is such a strong avenue for people looking up new artists. When a Spotify user listens to an artist, they have the option to listen to similar music. Spotify also provides an option listeners call the “Discover”, which allows the user to sample new music similar to their music taste.
Sam Miller, from the band Paradise Fears, recently posted on his Twitter about his stance on Taylor Swift taking her music off the service.
“The advantages of people being able to try new music risk-free seems worth it when it comes to other revenue streams,” said Miller. “Regardless of all of that, money shouldn’t be the core value in the discussion. People listen to music on Spotify. More people listening to music, more people trying music, that’s good for us culturally.”
It is really important that people utilize Spotify for discovering music and the constantly updated playlists, instead of other streaming devices. Spotify gives users the chance to listen to music that suits current moods, time of day and certain holiday themes.
Other streaming services are preferred over Spotify because of the higher quality of sound. Music service Tidal, re-launched by Jay-Z, gives the music service better bass quality according to CNET.
CNET reporter Xiomara Blanco conducted research last month about Apple Music vs. Spotify, but found herself going back to Spotify after using Apple Music for a month.
“If you love music, Spotify does a better job at cultivating a community amongst your music listening friends and showing you a greater range of new music from artists you won’t hear on Top 40 radio,” said Blanco. “Fellow music nerds, feel free to stick with Spotify for now.”
